Bamboo has been regarded as an auspicious plant since ancient times. The Chinese character for "bamboo" (Zhu) sounds similar to the character for "blessing" (Zhu), carrying the meaning of good wishes. The sound of bamboo, associated with auspiciousness, is considered to drive away evil spirits and protect people's safety and happiness. It is said that the tradition of using firecrackers during the Lunar New Year originated from wrapping them with bamboo. When ignited, they produce a loud "huping" sound, which is believed to dispel demons and ensure people's well-being and prosperity. Thus, firecrackers have become essential festive items during the Chinese New Year. Furthermore, the sound of "bao" (Bao) in Chinese, which means "burst," sounds similar to the sound of "bao" (Bao), meaning "report." The sound of "zhu" (Zhu), which means "bamboo," is similar to the sound of "zhu" (Zhu), meaning "blessing." This is why firecrackers have become symbolic of joy and celebration during traditional Chinese festivals. In many auspicious Chinese artworks, there are often depictions of children setting off firecrackers, symbolizing the wish for peace and blessings. People combine bamboo with other auspicious items to express their desire for good fortune and happiness.
Before the invention of paper, ancient people used bamboo slips for writing letters, and "bamboo report" became another name for "family letter." There is also a legend that the sound produced by roasting bamboo can drive away the monster called "Nian." All of these stories imbue bamboo with the meaning of "peace." In later generations, the phrase "bamboo reports peace" came to symbolize a "safe and sound family letter."
